Colleagues -

I think that the outpouring of support from the faculty and staff for our chapter chair and our union's right to communicate is more than gratifying - it's thrilling. If that same sense of solidarity and dedication could be generated in behalf of the faculty's right to a strong role in college governance, we'd really be a force to be reckoned with - a force that could not be threatened with e-mail bans or other instruments of disdain and petty repression.

Think about how things ought to be - and how to make it happen.

FACULTY COUNCIL

Dear Sally,

Congratulations! This is the first time I’ve ever seen a suggestion on Groupwise, however mild, that something may be seriously amiss at LaGuardia. I am responding to your invitation to “think about how things ought to be” by supplying my own short list.

As professional educators, we ought not to tolerate the existence at LaGuardia of:

1. Petty bureaucrats who dictate how we may communicate with each other.

2. A President who is a documented liar. (See, for example, the 9/2005 Clarion article reprinted in item #56 at www.laguardiacorruption.com/update_contd_2).

3. Fraudulent remedial Compass exams (with a passing score of 30 when the nation-wide average passing Compass score is 44).

4. Retention, tenure and promotion processes based on cronyism and the whims of an opportunistic floozy. (Almost every year, documented incompetents are retained, tenured and promoted while people of demonstrable merit are ignored or fired).

5. Wholesale (sometimes literally) grade inflation.

6. Cronied-up Profs with bogus credentials (Columbia Teacher’s College weekend Ph.D’s, College of the Pacific-type diploma mills, etc.) who have inadequate knowledge of the subjects they purport to teach. For example, the full Prof of math who “teaches” calculus by reading the textbook aloud in class.

7. Power-hungry chairpersons whose tenuous grip on power drives them to intolerance of the slightest criticism or imagined challenge to their authority. This is the primary cause of LaGuardia’s long and sordid history of firing gifted instructors.

8. Frequent and irritating harangues from administrators on the award-winning academic excellence of LaGuardia, when any competent observer can see that, in fact, LaGuardia operates on the level of a junior high school.

9. A spineless union leadership that settles for substandard wages and benefits, provides worthless so-called “counseling” for members appealing unjust tenure and promotion decisions, and allows TIAA-CREF to hoodwink members with false and misleading “illustrations” of their projected retirement incomes.

10. A thoroughly intimidated faculty that plays no real role in College governance.
