Dear President Mellow,
I am writing to you because I believe you may not be aware of the regrettable turn of events that has occurred regarding my Dec. 5, 2000 agreement with Audrey Harrigan [President's Executive Associate]. At that time it was agreed, among other things, that I would be given a list of projects to complete and that upon their successful completion you, in turn, would support me for promotion to Associate Prof. in Apr. 2001. The list of projects however, despite my repeated inquiries, did not appear until Feb. 7, 2001, when I obtained it in a certified letter from Vice President Bihn. This letter outlined three projects but then concluded with the remark "Given the time frame, the earliest you can be considered for promotion would be for the 2002-2003 academic year". In a phone conversation with Vice President Bihn on Feb. 8, he expressed the opinion that I would not be able to complete the projects in the remaining time. When I pointed out that I was in no way responsible for the two month delay on the projects and that it now appeared that the Administration had reneged on our agreement, he had no comment.
I had been given the understanding from a very helpful and sympathetic Ms. Harrigan that you entered into an agreement with me in a sincere desire to correct a seven-year-old injustice. I believe I have acted in good faith during these negotiations and do not hesitate to assure you that I would complete these projects, if necessary, next year. I would also hope that your support for my promotion will remain on schedule for this April, as per our agreement. Thus, I now appeal to you for a judgment in this matter.
Sincerely,
Martin Millman
NOTE: As of March 22, 2001 I have yet to receive an acknowledgment of this letter, let alone a reply, which leads me to assume that the Administration has indeed reneged on their agreement with me. It is quite frankly disgusting, in a college where people obtain promotions via racial-bloc voting and political cronyism and where a corrupt P&B committee promotes documented incompetents by carefully avoiding the documentation, that a new Administration is so pathetically incapable of honoring an agreement to correct an admitted injustice - despite their professed best intentions.
