RE: Anti-Semitism in the Mathematics Department
I would like to draw your attention to the following disturbing facts:
1. I am the only Jew to have received tenure in the Mathematics Department in the past TWENTY years. Indeed, I am the only Jew to have even come up for the tenure decision during that twenty-year period. A total of 14 Math faculty have received tenure in that period. As a strong advocate of equal opportunity for all, I find this circumstance morally and ethically repugnant, particularly at an institution that professes ethnic and religious equality.
2. The Jewish population of the Mathematics Department has steadily declined from 35% to 12% over the past twenty years despite the fact that roughly half our job applicants are Jewish. The department currently employs three Jews, two of whom are tenured, out of a total of 26 members.
3. I was hired by the Mathematics Department as Assistant Prof. 13 years ago and have never been promoted despite a documented record of exceptional college contributions, the best publication record in the department and the best student evaluations. Others, far less qualified, have been promoted during this period.
Can all this be the result of mere coincidence? Draw your own conclusions.
