| MEMO TO: LaGuardia Faculty, Staff and Administration FROM: M. Millman DATE: 3/19/01 RE: The Wake of Kathirgama Nathan I just returned home in emotional turmoil and tears from the wake of my good friend and colleague Kathirgama Nathan, one of the finest men I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Nathan was an Oxford Ph.D., brilliant mathematician, and gifted teacher. He came to LaGuardia 20 years ago as Assistant Prof. and was never promoted beyond Associate Prof. despite the fact that he was capable of more creativity in his sleep than are some of our nitwit Full Profs., with their Mickey Mouse degrees, in a lifetime. The reason for his non-promotion is well-known to be the usual filthy LaGuardia politics and racism I have so often alluded to in these memos. As my wife and I entered the funeral chapel, my head swimming with fond memories of dinners we shared at the Delhi Palace restaurant with Nathan and his lovely wife, I was at once shocked and nauseated by the presence at this solemn Hindu ritual of several crooks and racists who were largely responsible for Nathan's miserable treatment at LaGuardia. I was revulsed beyond words when one of them actually expressed her "condolences" directly to the grieving widow. These people had shamelessly overstepped the bounds of human decency and their presence was an affront to Nathan's family; but no matter - at LaGuardia the show must go on. I am not a particularly religious man, but if there is an incarnation of pure evil upon the earth, then this was surely it. |
