RE: Math Department Corruption and Incompetence
A small group of predators has been in control of the department for some time now and has milked it for all they could get in terms of personal advancement. The sick LaGuardia system permits this. However, the feeding frenzy has reduced our department to the lowest point in its history. To wit:
1. Tenure and promotions for faculty with abominable student ratings while others with real merit are ignored.
2. Our three largest courses, MAT 95, 96 and 120 [remedial arithmetic, remedial algebra, Statistics I], have been reduced to irrational garbage under the guise of "reform".
3. Full Profs. who are incapable of teaching fundamental courses, such as Calculus and Statistics.
4. Idiotic and/or inappropriate textbooks for remedial courses as well as precalculus and calculus. These books have been declared mandatory although they are loathed by the majority of instructors. The remedial arithmetic text, in particular, is in clear violation of conflict-of-interest (a favored crony is co-author) and is largely responsible for the 50% failure rate on the CUNY remedial math exam.
5. Teacher-training seminars conducted by a faculty member who has repeatedly been the target of en-masse complaints by her own frustrated classes.
6. A person in a key leadership role who has previously been fired for incompetence.
7. Thoroughgoing and ruthless intimidation of untenured faculty.
8. Precedent-making violations of academic freedom.
9. Racial-bloc voting in departmental elections.
10. Since its inception, the department has been plagued by persons who are essentially politicians with no interest in the study of mathematics. They are eager for power although they have neither the moral integrity nor the intellectual capacity to use it wisely.
