Millman To: Math Faculty RE: The Firing of Ali Darwish Have you ever seen hyenas at the zoo frantically climbing over each other, trying to catch the scraps of meat that are thrown? The analogy between that scene and the LaGuardia retention and promotion rat-race is too obvious to require elaboration. What is perhaps not as obvious is the process by which the hyena-mentality generates slimeball politics as people scramble to protect their interests. Good people caught in a bad system; ethical people behaving unethically. Slimeball politics, in turn, slowly transforms a department from a vital learning environment with a dedicated, enthusiastic and innovative faculty into one with the intellectual atmosphere of a bagel shop - with a faculty splintered into demoralized do-nothings, warring racial factions, incompetent opportunists, and fear-ridden ass-lickers. The most recent step down this road of transformation in our department was taken with the firing of Ali Darwish. Ali is a true gentleman and scholar and was one of our best teachers. He met or exceeded every alleged criterion for retention listed in that unprofessional piece of nonsense called the Professional Staff Handbook. He has given this department a total of 17 years of part-time and full-time service. He was terminated for purely political reasons. In Ali's case, as in many others over the years, failure to express your outrage automatically expresses your acquiescence. And leads all of us one more step down that road. |
